The land on which Red Bird Farms is established was previously Comancheria.

The Comanche maintained their presence in the area until roughly the 1850s. The family honors the history of this land, as much blood was spilled during the decades of it’s settlement, & into it’s Texas statehood.

The earliest known filing on the land is dated May 27th, 1884, detailing such descriptions as, “Thence North crossing Teepee Road… to a stake & pile of buffalo bones…” Also noted were Duck Creek & further descriptions of the land, including prominent mounds, peaks & ravines. As well as trees such as Chinaberry & Mesquite, which remain prevalent, as well as Cedar & Cottonwood.

The earliest known documented title of ownership for the land is from 1911, by SM Swenson & Sons, a Swedish Immigrant Ranching & Mercantile family. Swenson filed on the land using Texas Railroad Land Certificates. These certificates, granted by the State of Texas to the Houston & Greater Northern Railroad Company, & patented to the Texas Land Company, could be used to acquire “unlocated land,” also called “untaken state land,” or “unclaimed property." Swenson acquired certificates by trading supplies carried by his large frontier Trading Post. Around 1909 Swenson Ranch Management sold much of the original land acquired.

The land was then bought & sold again, & in February 1926 Amy Dell’s Great-Great-Grandparents bought the 160 acres on which Red Bird Farms lies. For five generations the family has worked the land for farming, hunting & in partnership with local Ranchers.

The family feels blessed to be stewards of these rolling canyon lands & spring creek waters, & have deep respect & gratitude for the wildlife which make their home here.
